Audience Scanning Course
Audience scanning involves intentionally directing laser radiation into spaces where human eyes are present. While the visual effect is a deliberate choice, the resulting eye exposure is an unavoidable consequence of the practice. A frequent and dangerous misconception is that scanning a laser beam inherently spreads its power evenly across a pattern, which people incorrectly assume dramatically reduces the risk at any one point.
In reality, this assumption of diluted power is only true when a beam is physically divided in space, such as with diffraction gratings. A laser scanner operates completely differently by moving a single, full-power beam rapidly through space without ever weakening it. As a result, the retina is repeatedly struck by full-power exposures rather than a diluted beam.
This distinction is critical because retinal injury is driven by thermal processes and heat accumulation. Biological tissue reacts to peak energy delivery rather than comforting average power measurements, meaning short, repeated pulses can deposit energy much faster than the eye can dissipate it. Ultimately, scanning does not eliminate the hazard; it just changes the mechanism of how damage occurs, making single-pulse exposure the primary safety concern.
